My personal home server is now running The Fastest Serial ATA Hard Drive in the Known Universe. True to the name, it's stupid fast.
Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition has been installed on the drive. Normally $4,000, Microsoft accidentally gave me a free license two months ago.
My server is running the latest hardware. It's rack-mounted. It's running a fully patched and updated version of the most recent server operating system available. It's all perfectly legal.
For all intensive purposes, my apartment is a Datacenter. I'm not quite here yet, but I'm working on it.
A datacenter, shown here for contrast. Pic stolen from the Intertube.
The Velociraptor. A standard laptop-size 2.5" drive in a 3.5" heatsink designed to fit in a standard drive bay. I had to fit that into 5.25" mounting brackets due to being out of 3.5" bays. So I have a double-bracketed velociraptor.
Current pic of the server. Currently sporting 11 hard drives.
The velociraptor installed. No good angle available, but you can kinda see it under the temporarily-installed DVD drive. I needed the DVD drive to install Windows.
As you can see, I still have an old ATA ribbon running to the old C: drive (now B:) and the DVD drive. I'll keep those in there long enough to finish my data migration. Also pending motivation.
